In the past I’ve looked into subscription beauty boxes, but I couldn’t decide which one to go for or if I even wanted to commit to paying for one each month.
However in late July, Birchbox emailed me with an offer of two of their beauty boxes for only £10, plus an extra £3 delivery, so I decided to give it a try. I received the June and July boxes, so here’s my thoughts on what I got.
June Box-Paradise Found
When I first saw this box, I thought two things. Firstly it was smaller than I expected and secondly, I love the tropical, pineapple design. This box has a pull out draw, rather than a lift off lid, so I’ll be keeping it to store beauty bits in.
Eyeko-Fat Liquid Eyeliner in Black
The first item in the June box is a full sized, Eyeko eyeliner. I’ve been meaning to try out one of their eyeliners for quite some time, so I was excited to receive this.
Percy & Reed-Reassuringly Firm Session Hold Hairspray
Quite possibly the longest name for a hairspray, but this is another product I was happy to get. I don’t use hairspray that often, but this one promises to be humidity-resistant and light, which is perfect for summertime.
Benefit Cosmetics-Air Patrol BB Cream Eyelid Primer
Another product with an impossibly long name. This is a very small sample, but I enjoy trying out new eyeshadow primers. This is supposed to protect, prime and colour correct eyelids, whilst also nourishing the skin.
Monu Professional Skincare-MONUSpa Relaxing Bali Body Oil
After getting sunburnt in Malta, my skin’s been drier and I’ve had to moisturise more. I’m not sure if I’ll like using a body oil or if I’ll find it a bit too greasy, but it’s a welcome addition for my thirsty skin.
Pure & Light Organic-Essential Face Cream
The last product in the June box is this face cream, which sounds great. It has 27 organic antioxidant ingredients, such as Argan, Orange Blossom and Sandalwood, as well as Vitamins A, D and E. I’m not always that excited about receiving face creams, but the ingredients in this one has drawn me in.
July Box-Never-Ending Summer
The July box is a fairly pretty purple box, but the design doesn’t feel that summery to fit the theme. However, I do like the cute ‘best day ever’ bag the products come in.
LOC x Millie-Ultra-Gloss Lip Pencil in Bohemian Rose
The first product in the box, is one of Birchboxes own makeup items. Reality TV star Millie Mackintosh, collaborated with LOC (Love Of Colour), to create her own glossy lip pencil.
I was excited to receive this as I prefer lip crayons to lipsticks, but I’ve found this really disappointing. Not only is it pretty small for a full sized product, but the colour is more of a bubblegum/barbie pink than the name would suggest.
John Frieda-Frizz Ease Forever Smooth Anti-Frizz Primer
Another full sized item! Birchbox let you choose which John Frieda hair product you wanted, so I chose this over the volumizing product. You apply this on to damp hair, before blow drying to eliminate frizz.
Whilst I use John Frieda products and like them, I don’t find this the most exciting item to receive, as I could have easily picked this up myself. However, I know I will definitely use this product.
Nails Inc. Latex Effect Nail Polish in the shade Dalston Lane
The third item is from Nails Inc, which is a brand I like. I’ve never tried a Latex Effect nail polish before, so it’ll be interesting to see how this looks. The colour is a grey with purple undertones and it’s supposed to dry to a matte finish.
Caudalie-Polyphenol C15 SPF20 Anti-Wrinkle Protect Fluid
There’s a bit of a theme in these boxes for featuring items with super long names! This product acts as a sunscreen for your face, but it differs as it also contains antioxidants to fight wrinkles, vitamin C and hyaluronic acid.
I wish I’d had this before I went on holiday to Malta, as a sunscreen product like this would have been useful in the heat. As the UK’s experiencing some nice weather, I might still get some use from this.
Vasanti-Brighten Up! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator
The final product I got is this exfoliating cleanser. I’ve tried this out once and I found it a bit too abrasive and rough on my skin. I’ll be testing it again to see if I like it, but my first impressions of this product aren’t great.
Overall I’ve enjoyed trying out Birchbox, as there’s some new products for me to try and it feels like a nice treat to get these in the post. However, whilst I enjoyed the June box, I found the July one pretty disappointing. I unsubscribed after getting these, as I only want to order boxes if one looks good or if there’s offers on.
Let me know if you’ve tried Birchbox.
I’ve heard so much about Birchbox! I should probably give it a try. 🙂

Thanks for sharing! I’m subscribed to Ipsy, but have thought about adding in another subscription to the mix- Birchbox doesn’t seem too bad from what i’ve seen from this post and others!

No I quite enjoyed getting the two boxes. A few items are very small but I’d definitely order another box, if I liked the look of what’s inside☺ x

The boxes are pretty cute, especially the pineapple one😊 I’m trying to get used to the colour as I don’t wear that kind of pink, but it is pretty. The nail polish does look cool. I’ve never tried a latex effect one☺ x

No me neither, I had no idea latex polishes were a thing. What are they meant to be like? X

I have no idea! I couldn’t find out much about them. They’re meant to have a matte finish, so I don’t know what the latex part is lol☺ x

let us know how you like the air patrol primer! I’ve heard some mixed reviews about it, but i’m in the market for a really great lid primer (dry skin and oily lids, go figure)… would love to know what you think!
