Something in the Water-Book Review

So in almost four years of blogging, this is my first ever book review! I mention books in my monthly resolutions posts, where I do a very brief review of what I’ve read and whether I liked it or not. But today, I’m going to be writing about a book that I loved and finished in a matter of days.

Something in the Water by Catherine Steadman

This is actress Catherine Steadman’s first book and it’s an international bestseller.

The blurb on the back of the book says:

‘On a dream honeymoon to the tropical island of Bora Bora, newly married couple Mark and Erin go scuba diving. Everything is perfect. Until they find something in the water.

Erin and Mark decide to keep their discovery a secret. No one else need know; they trust each other implicitly.

But someone else does know. And in situations like these, it is far better to trust no one, not even those closest to you…’

(I don’t want to give too much away, but reading back over the blurb there are hints I missed, such as ‘trust no one, not even those closest to you’.)

Something in the Water has romantic elements as it focuses on Mark and Erin’s wedding and relationship but by no means is this a romantic, chick lit book. There’s crime, travel and many other genres laced through this book.

Mark is involved in banking and is used to the finer things in life. He’s not a relatable character for me and at times shows a nastier streak. That said throughout the book he isn’t unlikeable.

Erin is much easier to warm to as a character. She’s naive, trusting, almost childlike and just wants happiness.

Despite the story taking quite an out there turn after their honeymoon, with event after event happening and both characters changing and learning, the writing and language makes it seem believable, which is a real credit to Catherine Steadman as an author.

This book for me was gripping, interesting and I couldn’t wait to see how everything ended.

I didn’t want to throw in too many spoilers as I’d love people to read this book. Let me know if you’ve read Something in the Water or are planning to.
